German heritage optical brand Meyer Optik Görlitz has broken its nearly 18-month hiatus to announce the development of an all-new, high-performance manual prime lens.
According to photography news outlet Photo Rumors, the Hamburg-based manufacturer is currently developing the '42mm f/1.2' large-aperture lens, optimized for all-weather street and portrait photography.
Red Aperture Blades and Master Craftsmanship: Key Specs Revealed
The newly unveiled 42mm f/1.2 lens stands out not only for its unique focal length and incredible brightness, but also for its optical design maximized to deliver Meyer Optik’s signature artistic bokeh.
- Optical Structure: Features 10 elements in 10 groups, including 2 aspherical (ASPH) elements and a floating element mechanism (2 elements) to suppress distortion and maintain edge-to-edge sharpness.
- Aperture System: Utilizes a striking 15-blade 'Red Aperture' design to produce perfectly circular bokeh and incredibly smooth background blur.
- Supported Mounts: Will be available for Sony E, Canon RF, and Leica M mounts, targeting both mirrorless and rangefinder camera users.
- Production: Proudly 100% handmade by skilled craftsmen in Hamburg, Germany.
Having long been loved by photographers worldwide for its iconic "soap bubble" bokeh and vintage color rendering, anticipation is high for how Meyer Optik Görlitz will blend modern optical tech (aspherical and floating elements) with traditional craftsmanship.
Editor's Note "The combination of a unique 42mm standard focal length, a striking f/1.2 brightness, and the 15 'Red Aperture Blades' makes this lens incredibly exciting just to think about. For photographers who have grown bored of the usual 35mm or 50mm lenses, Meyer Optik’s return piece looks to be the ultimate premium toy."
