- A Miracle f/2 Aperture Starting at 24mm… Weight Reduction Holds the Key to Success

- Users Abuzz Over Rumored Mid-to-Late Year Announcement of Yet Another ‘World’s First’ Lens

Canon, a powerhouse in the optical industry, is reportedly preparing yet another game-changing card to reshape the full-frame mirrorless market. According to foreign media and reputable rumor sites like Canon Rumors, Canon is expected to officially announce a world-first RF 24-70mm f/2L lens within the second half of this year.

Following in the footsteps of the legendary "monster lens," the RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, this latest product news is drawing intense focus from photographers and videographers worldwide.

A True 'All-Rounder' That Erases the Limitations of 28mm

When Canon introduced the RF 28-70mm f/2L alongside the EOS R system back in 2018, it earned high praise for its prime-lens-quality sharpness and bright f/2 aperture. However, its 28mm starting focal length was always a point of compromise. In landscapes or expansive indoor event photography, the 4mm difference at the wide end is massive enough to completely redefine a frame.

The leaked RF 24-70mm f/2L addresses this by covering the universally loved standard zoom range—from a wide 24mm to a short-telephoto 70mm—while maintaining a constant f/2 maximum aperture throughout. It represents Canon's ambitious bid to completely replace multiple f/1.4 or f/1.8 prime lenses with a single, versatile zoom.

Lighter and Faster… What are the Spec Trade-offs?

When a zoom range widens and the aperture stays bright, weight is naturally the first concern. The existing 28-70mm f/2L weighs a hefty 1,430g, putting a significant strain on the wrist during extended shoots.

Fortunately, the new RF 24-70mm f/2L is expected to be "significantly" lighter than its predecessor. Industry insiders speculate that Canon is aiming for a sub-1kg design.

To achieve this, the lens will likely forgo optical image stabilization (OIS). Because the latest EOS R series bodies feature highly capable In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), Canon seems to be opting for the practical benefit of shedding physical weight. For autofocus, the lens is expected to feature either a high-speed, silent Dual Nano USM or the next-generation VCM (Voice Coil Motor) system that Canon has been actively introducing to its high-end lineup.

"It’s Not Alone"—Another World's First Teased

The most intriguing part of this rumor is that Canon's aggressive push doesn't stop here. Sources claim that alongside this lens, Canon plans to announce yet another lens boasting a 'world's first' title this year.

While specific details remain under wraps, industry experts speculate it could be an ultra-fast telephoto zoom lens designed to counter a competitor's recent constant f/2 telephoto release, or perhaps an entirely new concept for a high-end lens.

A release window around late August or early September is highly rumored. While the expected price tag of around $3,000 (roughly mid-to-late 4 million KRW) will certainly not be cheap, it will undoubtedly become an irresistible, top-tier choice for professionals and high-amateur users tired of hauling multiple prime lenses in their bags.

📝 Editor's Note

"A constant f/2 zoom starting at 24mm? Canon has finally answered the long-standing prayers of its users. For wedding and event photographers who frequently wished for that extra 4mm of wide-angle while using the 28-70mm, it's time to get your wallets ready. However, with rumors pointing to the omission of OIS to save weight, checking your wrist strength and your camera body's IBIS performance will be a must! Either way, with another 'world's first' waiting in the wings, it looks like Canon is fully intent on taking all our money this year."
