- CIPA Releases Q1 2026 Production Stats… Mirrorless Shipments Up 10% Year-over-Year

According to the latest data released by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA), the global camera market in March 2026 showed a clear recovery compared to the beginning of the year (January and February), recording growth over the same period last year. Notably, while mirrorless and compact cameras are driving the market, the decline of DSLRs is accelerating further.
■ Parallel Growth in Mirrorless and Compact Cameras
The figures for March this year sent positive signals compared to the same period in 2025. The most prominent growth was seen in the mirrorless camera segment. Year-to-date (YTD) shipment volume increased by 10%, and shipment value also rose by 7%, proving once again that mirrorless remains the market mainstream.
An interesting highlight is the resurgence of "point-and-shoot" compact cameras. The compact camera segment saw a staggering 23% increase in YTD shipment volume and a 16% increase in shipment value. This trend is interpreted as a result of the demand for high-performance premium compacts and the influx of new users driven by the ongoing retro photography trend.
■ The Collapse of DSLRs and Shifts in the Lens Market
On the other hand, DSLR cameras received a dismal report card. Compared to the previous year’s YTD figures, shipment volume plummeted by 40%, and shipment value dropped by nearly half at 49%. As manufacturers halt new development and focus exclusively on mirrorless systems, the exit from the market is gaining speed.
In the lens market, results varied by sensor format. Lenses for sensors smaller than 35mm (such as APS-C) saw a 6% increase in units and a 16% increase in value. In contrast, full-frame and larger lenses saw stagnant unit sales and a slight 2% decrease in value. However, the lens-to-body ratio rose slightly from 1.59 last year to 1.6 this year, indicating that users' appetite for purchasing glass remains solid.
📝 Editor’s Note
"The era of the DSLR is fading faster than expected. The market's focus has now split into two directions: 'How small and powerful can it be? (Mirrorless)' or 'How much personality does it have? (Compact).' In particular, the remarkable growth of compact cameras suggests that consumers, weary of smartphone photography, are returning to the tactile experience of dedicated cameras."
