– Net loss of ¥86.0 billion due to large-scale impairment in Digital Manufacturing – Imaging segment maintains revenue via entry-level mirrorless sales... Recovery targeted for FY2027

Nikon Corporation announced its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2026 (April 2025 – March 2026) on the 8th. According to the release, while Nikon faced a severe management chill with record-breaking net losses, the core Imaging Products Business successfully maintained a glimmer of hope.

◇ Stark Contrast by Segment... Hit by ¥90.6 Billion One-time Charge

Nikon’s total revenue for this fiscal year fell 5.3% year-on-year to ¥677.1 billion. Notably, the company swung from an operating profit of ¥2.4 billion in the previous year to an operating loss of ¥112.4 billion, with a net loss totaling ¥86.0 billion (approx. $570 million).

The primary driver behind this historic deficit was not the camera business, but the "Digital Manufacturing" segment. Nikon recorded a one-time impairment loss of approximately ¥90.6 billion related to goodwill and intangible assets from its acquisition of metal 3D printer manufacturer "Nikon SLM Solutions," which severely eroded overall profitability.

◇ Imaging Business Acts as a "Bulwark" by Expanding Market Share

In contrast, the Imaging Products Business, responsible for cameras, showed relatively resilient performance. Revenue for the segment reached ¥290.0 billion, a slight decrease of only 1.8% compared to the previous year.

Specifically, camera body sales increased from 850,000 units in the previous year to 910,000 units, securing a market share of 12.9% for bodies and 12.3% for lenses (with 1.3 million lenses sold). Nikon analyzed that "strong sales of entry-level mirrorless lineups, such as the Z5 II and Z50 II, contributed to maintaining revenue." However, due to changes in the product mix, increased promotional costs, and the impact of tariffs, the segment's operating profit plummeted 59.5% year-on-year to ¥16.7 billion.

◇ Forecasting a "V-shaped Recovery" for 2027... Targeting ¥10 Billion Profit

Nikon presented an optimistic outlook for the upcoming FY2027 (April 2026 – March 2027). With the removal of one-time loss factors, the company aims to achieve a turnaround with total revenue of ¥740.0 billion and an operating profit of ¥10.0 billion.

The Imaging Products Business is also targeting revenue of ¥303.0 billion (a 4.4% increase). Despite remaining variables such as rising memory semiconductor prices and tariff uncertainties, Nikon plans to gradually recover profitability by expanding its high-value-added lens lineup and implementing efficient cost management.

▣ Editor’s Note

"Looking at the raw numbers, it might seem like a 'Nikon crisis,' but a deeper look reveals that the camera business is still serving as a robust cash cow. Having paid a painful 'tuition fee' for its 3D printing venture, all eyes are now on whether Nikon can reclaim its pride as an optical powerhouse through its 2027 financial performance."
