Aims to improve AF issues where focus locks on snow/rain instead of the subject Expected to resolve long-standing frustrations among wildlife and bird photographers

Nikon’s flagship mirrorless camera, the 'Z9,' is expected to receive a major boost to its autofocus (AF) performance in harsh weather conditions—an area previously pointed out as a persistent weak spot.

Recently, 'Nikon Rumors,' a prominent overseas camera news outlet, reported that Nikon is preparing a new firmware update specifically designed to address AF issues that occur during heavy snowfall or torrential rain.

For some time, many professional photographers and users have voiced complaints on camera communities and forums regarding the Z9’s AF system losing its intended subjects in extreme weather. The dissatisfaction has been particularly high among wildlife and bird photographers. Even with subject detection enabled to track the eyes or faces of subjects, the camera frequently suffers from 'focus hunting' or shifts its focus to high-contrast snowflakes and raindrops blocking the path between the camera and the subject.

Some users have expressed disappointment, noting that this phenomenon is more pronounced on the mirrorless Z9 than on Nikon's older flagship DSLR cameras. Industry experts have attributed this to the technical limitations of focal-plane phase-detection AF systems, which can mistake dense, airborne particles for the actual subject.

The rumored firmware update is reportedly focused on heavily modifying the AF algorithm. This adjustment will allow the system to remain stable and accurately lock onto and track the primary subject (such as people or animals), even in environments cluttered with high-density airborne particles.

If this update is officially released, it is anticipated to significantly increase the 'keeper rate' for professional users who frequently shoot winter sports, outdoor documentaries in inclement weather, or wildlife.

✍️ Editor's Note

"Nikon has a track record of overcoming hardware limitations through firmware updates, which is why mirrorless users are paying close attention to this rumor. We look forward to seeing the Z9 perfectly pierce through heavy snow to lock onto an eagle's eye without hesitation."
