The upcoming full-frame E-mount lens from LK Samyang (Samyang Optics) and Schneider Kreuznach, which has been drawing immense attention as a collaboration between Germany’s original optical technology and Korea’s premier lens manufacturer, is scheduled to be officially unveiled on June 25. According to major foreign media outlets, including SonyAlphaRumors, one of the unreleased core zoom lenses from the Samyang-Schneider joint lineup is awaiting an official announcement at the end of this month, capturing the attention of creators worldwide. Currently, the two most anticipated candidates are the "AF 28-135mm f/2.8" and the "AF 60-180mm f/2.8."
The Ultimate All-in-One Video Zoom Lens: AF 28-135mm f/2.8
The first highly likely candidate is the AF 28-135mm f/2.8, an all-rounder focal length that videographers and hybrid shooters have been eagerly anticipating.
- Key Features: This versatile lens covers everything from a 28mm wide-angle to a 135mm telephoto, all while maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture.
- Performance & Target: It is one stop brighter than Sony’s existing video-centric lens, the FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS, offering dramatic background separation and superior low-light performance. Notably, it is rumored to feature Samyang’s newly developed high-performance Linear VCM (Voice Coil Motor), delivering faster and quieter autofocus compared to conventional stepping motors—making it perfectly optimized for high-end video and action shooting.
Completing the Alternative f/2.8 Trinity: AF 60-180mm f/2.8
The other strong contender is the AF 60-180mm f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens, which received widespread acclaim when its working prototype was showcased at CP+ 2026.
- Key Features: This lens represents the final piece of the puzzle to complete Samyang’s unique "Alternative f/2.8 Trinity" lineup, alongside the previously released AF 14-24mm f/2.8 and AF 24-60mm f/2.8.
- Performance & Target: It features a significantly more compact and lightweight housing compared to traditional 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses, maximizing portability. With a 77mm filter thread, it boasts a short minimum focusing distance ranging from 0.35m to 0.78m depending on the focal length, making it highly advantageous for close-up macro shots. It is expected to emerge as a formidable competitor to the Tamron 70-180mm G2 for Sony mirrorless users who prefer a lightweight system.
Optical industry insiders do not rule out the possibility that both lenses have already reached the mass production stage. This means we could see either a simultaneous dual-lens announcement on June 25 or a sequential release following an initial showcase of one model.
[Editor's Note] Proving that the collaboration between Samyang and Schneider is far from a one-off event, lenses with incredibly attractive focal lengths are pouring into the market. Personally, I am highly anticipating the video performance of the 28-135mm f/2.8, equipped with the new Linear VCM motor. It will be fascinating to see how Samyang reinterprets the alternative focal length trend pioneered by Tamron, this time infused with Schneider’s distinct optical flavor. We will be keeping a close eye on the official announcement on June 25.
