A revolutionary shift is on the horizon for Canon’s flagship super-telephoto prime lens lineup, affectionately known as the "White Lenses." According to the prominent camera rumor site Canon Rumors, the next-generation successors to Canon’s iconic sports and wildlife lenses—the RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 600mm f/4L IS USM—are expected to be announced as early as the end of the fourth quarter of this year.

The most defining upgrade in this generational leap is the integration of a built-in teleconverter. This feature, which has long been an object of envy for Canon users after appearing on select high-end Nikon telephoto lenses, is finally making its debut in Canon’s RF-mount flagship glass.

Foreign media and industry insiders confidently predict that both upcoming lenses will feature a built-in 1.4x teleconverter. With this addition, photographers will no longer have to endure the hassle of detaching the lens from the camera body in the field. Instead, a simple flick of a mechanical switch will instantly extend the focal length. The 400mm f/2.8 will instantly transform into a 560mm f/4 lens, while the 600mm f/4 will morph into an 840mm f/5.6. This is expected to offer unprecedented mobility and speed on sports sidelines and in wildlife habitats, where catching a split-second moment is everything.

Furthermore, some sources hint that these new releases will go beyond merely housing a teleconverter, incorporating an innovative technology that could mark a "first-ever" milestone in optical history. While some speculate about the possibility of a "dual teleconverter" system capable of switching between 1.4x and 2.0x magnification, the exact technical specifications remain under wraps.

Alongside this, intriguing rumors suggest that Canon is also developing a completely new concept for a 500mm prime lens, designed to stand apart from the existing lineup.

The next-generation RF 400mm and 600mm lenses are projected to be unveiled late this year, with actual market supply and shipping slated to begin in the first quarter of 2027. Anticipation is already building across the industry to see how Canon’s new heavyweight "White Lenses"—which aim to push the technical boundaries of optics once again—will reshape the gear bags and shooting workflows of professional photographers.

✍️ Editor's Note

"The days of fumbling with heavy teleconverters in your pocket while panicking over dust entering the sensor seem to be coming to an end. Seamlessly toggling between 600mm and 840mm with a single lever is the kind of game-changing convenience that will make this a legendary, 'worth-every-penny' upgrade for pros. The real test, however, will be how flawlessly Canon managed to suppress the inevitable weight gain from the built-in optics—and just how astronomical the price tag of these already notoriously expensive flagship lenses will get."
