– Full-frame closes the gap at base ISO, but medium format maintains dominance from ISO 500 onwards

According to recent sensor performance analyses, Sony’s latest full-frame mirrorless camera, the a7R VI, has achieved a remarkable feat by matching the dynamic range (DR) of the medium format powerhouse, Fujifilm’s GFX100 II, in the low ISO range.
This test result vividly demonstrates how far full-frame sensor technology has come in narrowing the physical gap between format sizes, thanks to innovative sensor architectures like DGO (Dual Gain Output) or equivalent technologies. At base ISO levels, the Sony a7R VI displayed incredible shadow detail and highlight retention, performing nearly on par with the 100-megapixel medium format sensor in capturing extreme contrast.
■ The ISO 500 Barrier: Why Medium Format Still Reigns Supreme
However, the physical limitations of sensor size have not been entirely erased. The tide turns dramatically once the sensitivity climbs to ISO 500 and above.
Starting from ISO 500, the medium format sensor of the Fujifilm GFX100 II leaves the full-frame Sony a7R VI far behind, maintaining a commanding lead in dynamic range. This reconfirms that at higher ISOs, the sheer volume of light captured by a larger sensor area and greater pixel pitch remains a physical barrier that cannot be overcome by software or sensor circuit "magic" alone.
Consequently, in environments where low ISO shooting is the norm—such as in-studio setups or well-lit landscape photography—the Sony a7R VI offers incredible mobility and cost-effectiveness that rivals medium format systems. However, for specialized fields requiring high-ISO shooting or uncontrollable lighting conditions, these results clearly demonstrate why medium format still holds the crown and proves that "sensor size is king."
[EDITOR'S NOTE]
"While advancements in full-frame technology are hot on its heels, the deep and vast dynamic range of a medium format sensor becomes an insurmountable wall the moment you bump up the ISO. If your work revolves around studio still lifes or daytime landscapes, the Sony a7R VI is a phenomenal choice. But if you demand the absolute ultimate shot in unpredictable, low-light environments, Fujifilm’s GFX remains the definitive answer."
