Sony has unveiled a revolutionary card that will elevate the ecosystem of its flagship digital cinema camera, the VENICE 2. On the 3rd, Sony officially announced the development of the 'RIALTO 65', a new image sensor block designed to enable flawless 65mm medium format shooting within the VENICE 2 system. This new product is slated for an official release in the first half of 2027.
The most notable feature of the 'RIALTO 65' is its overwhelming scalability, which can shift the paradigm of a camera system by simply replacing the sensor block without needing to swap out the existing camera body. It can be docked directly onto the VENICE 2 body or detached using an extension cable to operate as a lightweight unit. This allows cinematographers to fully leverage the breathtaking image quality of the 65mm large format even in tight spaces or during specialized shoots.
The sensor boasts an industry-leading size with a 3:2 aspect ratio, measuring approximately 64.60mm diagonally (53.75mm horizontally by 35.83mm vertically). This represents a light-gathering surface area that is a staggering 2.2 times larger than a conventional full-frame sensor. As a result, directors of photography can now capture an extraordinarily shallow depth of field, alongside the vast sense of space and exquisite detail unique to the medium format.
Its performance is equally formidable. It supports 9.6K resolution 3:2 Open Gate recording and offers multiple readout modes to maximize compatibility with various 65mm format lenses, which often have slightly narrower image circles. Sony plans to showcase the development prototype of the RIALTO 65 for the first time at the Cine Gear Expo held in Los Angeles, USA.
