A bizarre rumor originating from Chinese camera communities is rapidly spreading, capturing the attention of the global photography world. Word has it that Viltrox, a Chinese company that has rapidly risen as a budget-friendly third-party lens manufacturer, is preparing to expand beyond lenses into the mirrorless camera body market—and that its mount of choice might be none other than Nikon’s 'Z-mount.'

According to major foreign tech outlets like PhotoRumors, mock-up images and related patent filings for a Viltrox digital mirrorless camera recently leaked in China. The leaked patent features a mount design heavily resembling the mechanical structure and flange focal distance of the Nikon Z-mount, fueling speculation that the company might adopt this mount for its own proprietary camera body.

The reason this rumor is sending shockwaves through the industry is that Viltrox and Nikon are currently locked in a fierce "legal battle." Nikon has filed a lawsuit against Viltrox in the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court over original technology patents and licensing issues regarding the Z-mount. Given this high-stakes standoff, experts view Viltrox’s potential move to directly launch a camera body featuring Nikon’s proprietary Z-mount as effectively "pouring gasoline on a fire."

Some tech enthusiasts in China are putting forward a bold interpretation: "Since Nikon strictly controls third-party lens licensing, Viltrox is trying to develop its own body to break free from this dependency." However, cooler-headed analysts point out that since Viltrox recently officially joined the 'L-Mount Alliance,' opting for the open-standard L-mount would be far more realistic if they were to actually manufacture a camera. Furthermore, producing mirrorless bodies—which require high-performance sensors, processors, and In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS)—demands an entirely different level of massive capital compared to manufacturing lenses, casting doubt on the credibility of the rumor.

Ultimately, the prevailing consensus is that this commotion is likely a "misinterpreted rumor." It appears that a Z-mount design patent registered by Viltrox in China (most likely for intellectual property defense against the ongoing lawsuit) combined with the wild imagination of internet users to create a sensationalized headline.

[Editor's Note]

"Manufacturing and releasing a camera using the proprietary mount of a company that is currently suing you? That is a level of audacity usually reserved for movies. While practically impossible in reality, the concept of a third-party manufacturer releasing its own proprietary body is always a captivating sci-fi story that gets prosumers' hearts racing. In all likelihood, what Viltrox actually threw at Nikon wasn't a camera, but rather a defensive patent shield."
