Sony has officially announced the development of 'RIALTO 65,' a groundbreaking, ultra-large camera sensor block destined to shift the paradigm of filmmaking, alongside the release of its first images.
The newly unveiled sensor boasts a 65mm-class format with a surface area 2.2 times larger than a standard full-frame sensor. In the camera market, its monstrous specifications comfortably place it within the 'Medium Format' category.
Mind-Blowing Specs Pushing the Boundaries of Cinema
- Ultra-Large Dimensions: Adopts a 3:2 aspect ratio measuring 53.75mm x 35.83mm (with a diagonal of approximately 64.60mm).
- Ultra-High Resolution: Supports up to 9.6K Open Gate recording.
- Unrivaled Expression: Delivers the extremely shallow depth of field (bokeh) and overwhelming sense of scale unique to medium format sensors.

An Innovative Modular Architecture: No Body Replacement Required The most astonishing part of this announcement is Sony's strategy. Instead of launching an entirely new camera body, they developed this as a swappable sensor block that replaces the existing sensor unit on their flagship cinema camera, the VENICE 2. It can be mounted directly to the body or detached via an extension cable, allowing for seamless shooting in cramped spaces like fighter jet cockpits or car interiors.
The system is fully compatible with various 65mm-format cinema lenses, drawing immense anticipation from cinematographers worldwide. The product is slated for an official release in the first half of 2027.
✍️ Editor's Note "Enabling filmmakers to shoot 65mm IMAX-level cinema simply by swapping the sensor rather than replacing the entire camera body—Sony’s modular ecosystem strategy is nothing short of brilliant. This is a monumental scale-up that would undoubtedly catch the eye of directors like Christopher Nolan."
