Canon has rolled out an urgent software update for users of its high-performance full-frame mirrorless camera, the 'EOS R5 Mark II'.
This v1.3.1 update is a swift response to resolve a specific malfunction that arose following the major v1.3.0 firmware update released in mid-May. The core of this update is an Autofocus (AF) bug fix. It completely resolves an issue where the camera would temporarily malfunction when using the 'Touch & Drag AF' feature while the AF area was set to 'Full Area AF'.
While this bug occurs rarely under normal shooting conditions, this patch is essential for photographers who frequently eye the viewfinder while using the LCD screen to shift focus points.
This latest version also cumulatively includes all the 15+ major feature enhancements and system improvements from the previous update, such as enhanced tracking for 'Registered People Priority' (even under challenging conditions like profiles, blurry faces, or children), 'Close-up Demo AF' for video, Wi-Fi frequency band selection (5GHz / 2.4GHz), and DPRAW shooting support. EOS R5 Mark II users are highly encouraged to download the new firmware from Canon's official website.
[Editor's Note]
Minor bugs trailing a massive feature update are almost an inevitable rite of passage for firmware. Canon deserves credit here for listening to user feedback and deploying a fix so rapidly. If you are a shooter who has experienced that mini-heart attack when your camera locked up while moving focus points with your thumb, it’s time to hook up your memory card to your PC. Safety and reliability always come first on set.
