"Does it run DOOM?"—the long-standing meme of the IT industry—has finally reached the realm of digital cameras.
Recently, Taylor Jackson, a famous Canadian wedding photographer and camera influencer, shared a video on his Instagram account showing the legendary classic first-person shooter (FPS) game 'DOOM (1993)' running on a Nikon full-frame mirrorless camera, the 'Zf'. The video has instantly captured the attention of camera and gaming enthusiasts worldwide.
In the released video, Jackson plays the game while looking at the 'DOOM' screen clearly displayed on the Nikon Zf's rear LCD monitor. Remarkably, despite the obvious lack of a traditional gamepad, he navigates the character through the eerie sci-fi map using the camera's rear 'D-pad' (directional keys) and fires the protagonist 'Doomguy's' pistol by pressing the camera's 'Playback button'.
As soon as the video was uploaded, netizens showed an explosive reaction. Comments such as "Perfect to play a round when you get bored during a photoshoot" and "The most ingenious and flawless camera hack ever" poured in. As the buzz escalated, even the official Nikon USA account left a witty comment on the post saying, "We… have some questions? 👀", expressing both bewilderment and curiosity.
Since its source code was made public, the 1993 classic 'DOOM' has been used by developers worldwide as a benchmark tool or a stage for tech stunts, owing to its ability to run on devices with extremely low embedded performance. Over the years, successful attempts have been made to port the game onto electronic calculators, refrigerators, smartwatches, and even the tiny screen of a digital pregnancy test.
However, experts remain divided on whether this Nikon Zf case is a genuine 'porting' achieved by cracking the internal firmware, or a clever 'fake/AI-generated video' utilizing advanced video editing or external display input. Nevertheless, the sheer visual impact and amusement of playing the epitome of classic gaming on the retro-styled Nikon Zf was more than enough to set the community ablaze.
✍️ Editor's Note "He was told to take a 'shot,' and he took it literally by playing a shooter! This absurd yet magnificent challenge even made Nikon HQ step in with shaking pupils. Can we look forward to the day when someone runs 'StarCraft' on a Canon or Sony camera next?"
