Sony has officially released the system software (firmware) Ver. 2.00 update for its full-frame mirrorless camera, the 'Alpha 7 V (ILCE-7M5).' This major post-launch update focuses on adding professional audio recording capabilities, introducing new focus options, optimizing FTP transfer for professional workflows, and enhancing overall system stability. With this release, the A7 V further solidifies its position as a highly refined hybrid body for both photography and videography.
Key Updates & Improvements
1. Expansion of Professional Audio & Focus Features
- High-Quality Audio Recording Support: When mounting the optional 'XLR-A4' XLR adapter to the Multi-Interface Shoe (MI Shoe), the camera now supports high-quality 96kHz 32-bit float audio recording.
- Preset Focus Function Added: Users can now utilize a Preset Focus feature to instantly recall predetermined focus distances, even on standard lenses without power zoom capabilities. (Excludes certain manual and third-party zoom lenses)
2. Optimized FTP Transfer & File Management for Higher Efficiency
- Scheduled Automatic FTP Transfer: A new scheduling feature allows protected still images and videos to be automatically transferred to an FTP server based on the timeline.
- Enhanced Security & Management Convenience: Support for SFTP server configuration has been added, and the camera can now automatically apply a protect flag to successfully transferred still images. Additionally, users can now simultaneously delete or rate images recorded across dual slots, and the playback screen has been improved to display both folder and file names together.
3. Support for Sony's Camera Authenticity Solution & Licensing
- Write Digital Signature Support: Sony’s anti-tamper 'Camera Authenticity Solution' has expanded its coverage to include video recording.
- The foundation has been laid for the 'Volume Photography License' (supporting features like scan & tag, photo cropping, etc.), which is available for high-volume shoots via in-app purchase.
4. Key Bug Fixes & Improved System Stability
- Resolved an intermittent issue where video recording would fail to initiate when the compact 'ECM-M1' shotgun microphone was attached.
- Fixed a critical power-related glitch where the camera would freeze or fail to turn back on after cycling the power while the 'Cnct. while Power OFF' network menu option was enabled.
- Enhanced compatibility with CFexpress Type A memory cards, including third-party brands, and significantly improved general operational stability.
💡 Editor's Note
The Ver. 2.00 update goes far beyond simple bug fixes, packing a punch with "essential" features tailored directly for the workflows of working creators. In particular, the addition of 32-bit float audio support and the Preset Focus feature will be a massive upgrade for hybrid users with heavy video demands. Since it also addresses intermittent power freezes and improves compatibility with third-party CFx cards, updating immediately is highly recommended for all Sony A7 V owners. (※ Note: Starting from this version, lens firmware updates via the memory card menu are no longer supported. To update lens firmware, you must now use the dedicated Windows/Mac software.)
