Version 1.3.0 briefly appeared and vanished on regional websites; major update promises AF improvements and DPRAW support.

A new firmware update for Canon’s high-performance mirrorless camera, the EOS R5 Mark II, has been causing a stir by appearing and disappearing intermittently on official Canon websites worldwide. Version 1.3.0 is more than a simple bug fix; it is drawing significant attention for including substantial autofocus (AF) enhancements and new shooting capabilities.

■ Significant AF Performance Boost and Enhanced Convenience

The core of the v1.3.0 firmware is the refined algorithm for the "Registered People Priority" mode. Tracking and detection capabilities have been significantly improved for challenging conditions, such as profile views, occluded faces, small subjects, or when photographing children. Additionally, an AF optimization feature for close-up video recording has been added, increasing convenience for vlogging and product reviews.

Customization options have also been greatly expanded. Users can now assign the "Pre-continuous Shooting" function to a custom button, and the White Balance settings now allow for saving up to four specific color temperature values. Notably, the ability to save and load AF settings to a card—transferable between multiple camera bodies of the same model—is expected to be a major win for professionals operating multiple kits.

■ Meticulous Updates for Videographers

Meaningful changes have also been spotted in video functions. The electronic level and grid can now be displayed during movie recording, and "False Color" settings can be enabled when HDR/C.Log View Assist is active. Furthermore, support for DPRAW (Dual Pixel RAW) shooting and the latest Software Development Kits (EDSDK/CCAPI) have been added, promising higher utility in professional workflows.

■ System Stability and Bug Fixes

Beyond new features, the update focuses on system stability. It addresses the "Err49" error that occurred during SFTP server communication, an issue where the power would turn off automatically during interval timer shooting, and a reboot phenomenon that occurred when pressing the shutter button while deleting images.

Currently, the firmware was briefly posted on some regional Canon sites but is not consistently available for download. Industry insiders suggest that "Canon appears to be repeating the release and withdrawal process during final checks due to potential technical issues." Experts recommend waiting for an official, stable announcement before attempting the update.

📝 Editor’s Note

"This is a 'meat and potatoes' update that goes far beyond simple bug fixes. The ability to assign Pre-shooting to a physical button will be a game-changer for wildlife photographers who live for split-second moments. However, given the inconsistent rollout, I’d suggest holding off on the update for a few days until the dust settles."
