Cosina has officially opened global pre-orders for its 15th native optical weapon tailored for the Nikon Z-mount system: the ‘NOKTON classic 35mm F1.4 Z’. Highly anticipated by vintage rendering enthusiasts since its prototype debut at CP+ earlier this year, the lens has finally hit major international retailers ahead of its official shipping window this July. The retail price is set at $699 USD (99,000 Yen).

1. Intended Aberrations Crafting a Distinctive 'Vintage Aesthetic'

While modern optical engineering relentlessly pursues "digital perfection" through edge-to-edge sharpness and absolute aberration control, this lens deliberately takes the opposite path. Utilizing a traditional double-Gauss symmetrical optical formula, it intentionally leaves controlled spherical aberrations and corner vignetting uncorrected at its maximum aperture of f/1.4. This creates a dreamy, painterly "glow effect" and swirling, organic circular bokeh reminiscent of analog film eras. Conversely, stopping down the aperture ring transforms the lens into a razor-sharp, high-contrast modern optic—offering two completely distinct visual identities in a single barrel.

2. Smart Manual Focus (MF) Driven by Native Electronic Contacts

Though the Nokton Classic 35mm F1.4 Z is a strictly mechanical manual focus lens, it features fully integrated electronic contacts inside the mount. This enables seamless, real-time communication with Nikon Z-series bodies to accurately record full Exif data (aperture values, lens naming, etc.). Furthermore, it natively pairs with the camera's In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) and unlocking Nikon’s complete digital focus-assist system. Photographers can fully utilize the focus point frame color-change confirmation, focus peaking guides, and magnified live-view focusing—preserving the satisfying tactile response of manual focusing with modern digital accuracy.

3. Ultra-Compact Profile and All-Metal Precision Craftsmanship

Measuring a mere 41.6mm in length and weighing just 250g, the lens delivers a flawless aesthetic and physical balance when mounted on Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless bodies (like the Zf and Z6 III) or its APS-C crop sensors (such as the Zfc). Completely eschewing plastic materials, the robust all-metal barrel and specialized dampening grease in the helicoid mechanism provide a silky-smooth, deliberate focusing experience. Additionally, the close-focus performance has evolved, bringing the minimum object distance down to a versatile 0.27m (shorter than the older E-mount counterpart) for dramatic, shallow depth-of-field close-ups. A dedicated screw-on metal lens hood is included in the box.

✍️ Editor's Note

"For Nikon shooters tired of the cold, clinical look of modern glass—especially those rocking retro bodies like the Zf or Zfc—this is an incredibly alluring piece of glass. Voigtlander is cementing its place as Nikon’s most faithful optical ally, rolling out its 15th dedicated lens for the Z-mount ecosystem. It’s a beautifully dual-faceted tool: you get to play with gorgeous, dream-like aberrations wide open at f/1.4, yet you can instantly claw back modern resolution simply by stopping it down. Turning a solid metal focus ring by hand with the safety net of Nikon's smart focus assist tools makes this the absolute ultimate everyday 'body cap' lens for artistic snapshot photographers."
