Eyes from video creators worldwide are locked on the successor to Sony’s video-centric "FX series." Sony Alpha Rumors recently compiled a batch of "wild rumors" from anonymous sources, reporting that a next-generation FX camera equipped with an entirely new sensor is currently in the pipeline.

The crux of these rumors points to a massive overhaul in sensor specifications and naming conventions for the upcoming model (tentatively dubbed the FX3 Mark II), which aims to succeed the FX3—the camera that has long dominated the compact cinema market.

■ "The 12MP Era is Over"… 24MP Stacked vs. 16MP Partially Stacked

The most heated debate right now centers on the sensor's pixel count and architecture. The current FX3 boasts incredible low-light performance thanks to its low-resolution 12.1-megapixel sensor. However, newly leaked information suggests a pixel upgrade is virtually guaranteed for the next generation.

Some sources claim Sony will deploy a 24+ megapixel, fully stacked dual-layer transistor pixel sensor to enable 6K open-gate shooting and a flawless electronic shutter. Conversely, other sources counter that a 16-megapixel-class partially stacked full-frame sensor, optimized for low-light dynamic range and ultra-fast readouts (240fps), will serve as the camera's core. Whichever direction Sony takes, the strategy seems focused on using advanced stacked technology to eliminate rolling shutter (the jello effect), maintaining the pristine motion quality the FX series is known for.

■ A Shift in Branding? "It Might Not Be Called the FX3 Mark II"

Intriguingly, insiders suggest this new release won't simply carry the predictable "FX3 Mark II" moniker. One source noted, "The next camera is not named the FX3 Mark II," hinting that Sony might completely redefine its cinema lineup branding or introduce an entirely new form-factor category.

Additionally, the next-gen body is rumored to feature 'DCG-HDR' technology for lossless HDR video, alongside 'Dynamic Active IS,' which delivers aggressive stabilization with minimal cropping.

Sony Alpha Rumors concluded, "While the detailed specs from various leaks differ slightly, they all point toward a major breakthrough in readout speed and HDR performance." It seems clear that Sony is cooking up something powerful to keep its competitors at bay.

### Editor's Note

"It has already been five years since the FX3 shook up the video industry ecosystem. The real test will be whether Sony can bump up the resolution while preserving that 'low-light monster' noise performance—and finally give us 6K open gate. Honestly, whether it's called the FX3 Mark II or the FX4 doesn't matter, as long as they completely eliminate rolling shutter."
