In the full-frame camera market, which accounts for about 70% of the interchangeable-lens camera market in South Korea, Sony Korea—solidifying its market leadership by maintaining the No. 1 spot for seven consecutive years—is officially launching the full-frame, ultra-high-resolution camera Alpha 7R VI (hereinafter "A7R6") in the domestic market. Coming four years after the introduction of the A7R5 in 2022, this new model is the first in the A7R series to feature a stacked image sensor. Alongside the A7R6, Sony Korea will also release the ultra-telephoto zoom lens FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS (hereinafter "SEL100400MC") and related accessories.
Sony’s Highest-Resolution Full-Frame Camera with a Stacked Sensor: Alpha 7R VI
The A7R6 features a 66.8-megapixel full-frame stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor, delivering up to 5.6 times faster readout speeds for enhanced image quality. With a wide dynamic range of up to 16 stops, it effectively suppresses noise in mid-to-high sensitivity ranges. The high-precision 5-axis optical image stabilization system provides a compensation effect of up to 8.5 stops at the center and up to 7.0 stops at the periphery.
Equipped with the BIONZ XR2™ engine—which first debuted in the A7M5—the camera supports blackout-free continuous shooting at up to approximately 30 fps and can perform up to 60 AF/AE calculations per second. Additionally, the improved Real-time Recognition AF+ allows for stable and precise tracking of fast-moving subjects. Featuring deep learning-based Auto White Balance (AI-AWB) and a visible light + IR sensor, it delivers stable and natural color reproduction even in shaded environments and indoor shoots.
Video performance has also evolved significantly. The A7R6 supports 8K 30p recording based on 8.2K oversampling, as well as uncropped full-frame 4K 60p and 120p video. For the first time in the Alpha series, it features Dual Gain Shooting, which reduces noise in shadows while preserving details, providing smooth tonal gradation across dark areas. The image stabilization system has doubled the correction range in the roll direction, and a new Dynamic Active Mode has been added to support stable, smooth handheld shooting. When paired with the separately purchased XLR-A4 XLR adapter, the camera supports in-body 96kHz 32-bit float audio recording. This eliminates the need for meticulous audio level adjustments on set, reducing the risk of distortion and capturing high-quality sound.
The camera features an approx. 9.44-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) that supports the DCI-P3 wide color gamut and 10-bit HDR. Its maximum brightness is approximately three times higher than previous models, ensuring a clear view even in bright environments. Thanks to high energy efficiency and an effective heat management system, it can capture up to 710 shots (using the LCD) and record 8K video continuously for up to 120 minutes without interruption. It features dual USB Type-C® ports that allow simultaneous charging and data transfer, and the rear buttons are illuminated for easy operation in low-light environments. It is equipped with a 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor for shooting from various angles, and the memory recall function has been upgraded to save up to 10 shooting configurations per mode.
Constant F4.5 Aperture Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens: SEL100400MC
Sony Korea is concurrently releasing the ultra-telephoto zoom lens SEL100400MC (FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS). The SEL100400MC is a G Master™ ultra-telephoto zoom lens featuring a constant F4.5 aperture, delivering overwhelming resolution and background defocus (bokeh) across the entire 100-400mm zoom range. The optical design incorporates a total of seven special elements, including a newly developed ED XA (extreme aspherical) lens, effectively suppressing various aberrations to ensure outstanding sharpness throughout the zoom range.
By applying four customized XD Linear Motors, a floating focus mechanism, and the latest AF algorithms, the lens achieves up to 3 times faster AF speed and a 50% improvement in subject tracking performance compared to the legacy SEL100400GM (FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS), making it easy to track fast-moving subjects. Weighing 1,840g, its inner zoom construction keeps the center of gravity stable, enhancing portability and maneuverability. This expands the photographer's creative freedom in fields like birding, sports, and photojournalism, where speed, reach, and image quality are critical to capturing decisive moments.
Because the inner zoom design maintains a constant physical length and a stable center of gravity across the entire zoom range, accurate framing adjustments can be made without altering the balance. The lens also supports the camera body's focus breathing compensation feature, correcting shifts in the angle of view during video recording. Four focus hold buttons and an assignable function ring enable intuitive, customized operation on location. Furthermore, a dust- and moisture-resistant design and a fluorine coating on the front lens element ensure reliable performance in demanding shooting conditions.
Optional Accessories for the A7R6 to Launch in June
Optional accessories designed for the A7R6 will be released throughout June. The rechargeable NP-SA100 battery pack is a high-capacity InfoLITHIUM™ battery that delivers approximately 1.3 times more power than the NP-FZ100 Z-series battery. Connecting it to the camera power supply optimizes heat dissipation performance, and it supports an in-camera battery degradation status display. The VG-C6 is a vertical grip that provides a comfortable and consistent hold for both horizontal and vertical shooting; it can house up to two high-capacity SA-series batteries to assist with long shoots. The BC-SAD1 is a dedicated dual charger for the NP-SA100, capable of fully charging two batteries simultaneously in about 115 minutes when using a USB PD (Power Delivery) supply of 45W or higher. The DC-C2 DC Coupler enables stable, continuous power supply via a USB Type-C cable connected to a USB PD power source of 100W or higher.
Pricing and Availability
The A7R6 and SEL100400MC are priced at 6,299,000 KRW and 6,590,000 KRW, respectively, and will be available through Sony Store online and offline official retailers. The NP-SA100 battery pack and the XLR-A4 audio adapter are priced at 149,000 KRW and 869,000 KRW, with sales starting on June 2. The BC-SAD1, VG-C6, and DC-C2 are scheduled for release later in June.
To celebrate the launch of the A7R6, Sony Korea hosted a digital unpacking event on Friday, May 29, via its official YouTube channel, "Alpha Universe Korea." Replays of the digital unpacking video remain available for viewing on Sony’s YouTube channel.
